Durban

Durban export pilot

Seabreeze Sundries in Durban shipped their very first export carton to Zimbabwe after a focused Export Spark orientation.

Seabreeze Sundries: Durban to SADC first

Seabreeze Sundries runs a four-person operation on Umbilo Road, specialising in local condiments and spice blends for independent grocers. Before this project, all their monthly turnover, about R43,000, came from the Durban area, with deliveries from Pinetown to Chatsworth. In late February, a reseller in Harare placed a trial order for six cartons. Seabreeze had never exported before. No SADC paperwork, no export code, not even a bank F178 form on hand. They’d heard border stories from a Boksburg cousin but didn’t know where to start.

The owner, Mr Moyo, wanted a simple export process that could slot in between month-end Debtors chasing and the usual rush to get stock out before school holidays. He reached out to us for Export Spark and a crash course on compliant carton shipping across Beitbridge.

What we did: week by week steps

We ran the Export Spark orientation over 18 days, moving in sync with Mr Moyo’s production lead time and his supplier delivery windows. Each step built towards a real, stamped SADC certificate and a carton that could move from Durban to Harare without getting stuck on VAT201 confusion or missing HS codes.

  1. Day 1: Mapped Seabreeze’s product codes to the correct HS numbers using the resource notes for food products. Checked with the supplier of glass jars in Springfield Park for correct origin statements.
  2. Day 3: Registered Seabreeze Sundries for SARS Exporter Code online and set up a FNB FICA update pack for cross-border payments.
  3. Day 5: Created a cargo manifest and carton contents slip as per SADC format. Gathered municipal trading permit and proof of VAT registration (for the VAT201 tick box at the border).
  4. Day 7: Booked a pre-clearance slot with a Durban road freight broker and arranged for SADC certificate application at the Point Customs office.
  5. Day 12: Walked Mr Moyo through the Export Spark checklist. Sorted the SADC certificate. Printed extra copies for the Beitbridge border post.
  6. Day 14: Coached the team on preparing a supplier note for Harare. Sent final digital copies to the customer and broker.
  7. Day 18: First carton shipped, with tracking and WhatsApp confirmation from the broker at Beitbridge.

It wasn’t plain sailing, but we caught every snag before cut-off (except an odd paperwork double check at the supplier, honestly). Here’s the breakdown.

Measured outcomes by end of March

Seabreeze Sundries shipped all six cartons to Harare, clearing the Beitbridge border on first try. Mr Moyo’s first export sale brought in R3,700 net after all fees, courier and supplies. SARS accepted the export code application on their first VAT201 cycle. The broker’s WhatsApp message: ‘Your box passed, no extra hold’. Seabreeze now has a master SADC template and a process, plus digital copies of their codes and supplier notes saved for future shipments.

They also spent only R1,100 on brokerage and customs, under Mr Moyo’s R2,000 estimate. You can see more of these results on our project list or read up on the Export Spark kit.

Three months onward: new habits

By June, Seabreeze Sundries had sent two more cartons to Zimbabwe and a sample box to a contact in Francistown, Botswana. They’ve kept their digital exporter proof and supplier notes up to date. Mr Moyo now runs a weekly export check-in every Tuesday at 8:30am, using a simple ritual from our ops rituals.

He’s kept in touch by email to confirm new border rules and keeps asking about expanding routes as Durban port patterns shift with load-shedding stages. His staff each know their small role, from prepping invoices to scanning SADC forms. You’ll find useful supplier notes for similar runs at supplier notes.
