Sandton mall weekend
This is how GlowPlait Skincare ran a winning two-day pop-up in Sandton City and tripled their qualified leads using Pop-Up Charm.
The business behind the stand
GlowPlait Skincare is a local Sandton SME with three full-timers making natural body butters, soaps and facial oils out of a small lab near Grayston Drive. They typically sell to loyal clients at Rosebank Market and an online shop, but wanted to explore higher foot traffic and face-to-face selling in a premium shopping mall for the first time. Before approaching us, GlowPlait had managed only one tiny activation in Kimberley (just 34 walk-ins over a long weekend, with 11 sales and no follow-up process). Sandton City’s foot traffic is way higher, up to 1,300 passersby per hour on a Saturday. That’s a big leap for a team of three.
How we ran the pop-up weekend
GlowPlait wanted to avoid the stress of figuring out mall paperwork, supplier logistics, and day-end banking in a rush. We recommended our Pop-Up Charm starter kit, mixing supplier contacts, mall paperwork cheat-sheets, and a load-shedding contingency planner. Here’s how the set-up went, from the first mall query to post-activation wrap-up.
- Day -21: Prepped GlowPlait’s CIPC docs and public liability insurance letter. Requested SASSA-friendly mobile POS quotes from two listed suppliers at our Sandton hub.
- Day -17: Sent completed mall trading permit forms for approval. Flagged a courier cut-off for fresh stock from their Kimberley cold-room.
- Day -12: Finalised signage spec, arranged branded t-shirts for all staff, and printed 200 promo flyers at a local Rosebank print shop.
- Day -10: Provided GlowPlait with a WhatsApp-ready day-end sales log template and cash-up checklist, with tips for handling the R5,000 float.
- Day -7: Gave feedback on their simple sampling script, made sure the card reader was activated, and confirmed backup lights for Stage 4 load-shedding.
- Day -2: Walked through a 15-minute final checklist call, checking permits, mall access times, and stock levels. Reminded the owner to bring her ID for mall security.
- Day 3 (post-event): Debriefed on what worked. Sent a tailored week-one follow-up ritual from our weekly ops rituals set.
Measured success over the weekend
By Sunday night, GlowPlait had served 396 shoppers with full samples and collected 158 qualified leads. Their team processed 52 direct sales (average basket size R320) and walked away with a confirmed R7,300 in sales, more than three times their best previous pop-up. Only one slip: they doubled up on one supplier’s name in the cash-up log, but sorted it by Monday with a quick email. The owner sent out personalised WhatsApps to every lead by Wednesday, using a sequence from our starter kits.
Our team reviewed their activation notes and updated the supplier notes files for future mall activations. The GlowPlait crew said the printed checklists and banking reminders gave them far more confidence on both days, especially when handling the lunchtime rush on Saturday. Mall management was happy, too: there were no safety or cash complaints logged.
Still running smarter, three months later
Three months on, GlowPlait built most of the pop-up steps into their monthly operations. They now use our sales log and cash-up sheets for every event, not just malls, and have started a simple quarterly stock take. Two of the mall activation suppliers now handle weekly restocks for their online orders. Their sampling and WhatsApp nurturing process continues, with the owner still running follow-up messages two days after every big weekend. The only thing they haven’t kept is the branded t-shirts, got a bit tired of them after a while, apparently.
